My plottwist is something I've worked on for the longest time but I couldn't seem to get it right—until reading Four: A Divergent Collection and watching the mockingjay part 1 trailer. There was something that instantly clicked for me between these two stories and wrote it in half an hour with a broken pencil and a wore out brain. When I sent this to Erin, she got SO excited and said that she adored it!!! I'm still in denial about whether or not she was telling the truth or not :-) so I'll let you all be the judge of that. Tris never died. She was momentarily wounded, Then David quickly used a secret serum he had kept her back into unconsciousness. Tris seeing her mother was only an illusion caused by the serum. He uses the memory serum on her and kept her imprisoned until he gained control and power of all Chicago and eventually the United States. Even the memory serum didn't work on David when Four used the memory serum on him.
After this, David took Tris's unconscious body to his new home hidden in Chicago. There, he invents a serum of persuasion and uses it on all the people of Chicago in order to gain enough support to create a new system of government for the country now known as Panem. Now living in Chicago, known as the Capitol, he uses the persuasion serum enough to bring the concept known as The Hunger Games in order to gain control over the previous country that he felt victimized for when the Bureau was blown up and all the fights of Chicago broke out; and also to rid the country of all the Genetically Damaged in order to live in what he believes to be a utopia. Later, he sends Tris to the poorest District of Panem. The blood samples he took from the citizens of Panem was used to seperate the Genetically Pure from the Genetically Damaged.
From there, he mentally and emotionally destroys the mind and life of all the victors to rid the country of the Genetically Damaged.
Meanwhile, Four , having fled the Capitol to District 12 finds Tris, who has been given a new name and a brainwashed past from David's serum, and tries to help her remember their love but instead recreates their love story like it's the first time. Four maintains a secret relationship with her: getting married and having kids. Once David—now the President of Panem who is known by the name of “Snow"—knows the existence of their relationship, he sets up a plan to cause an explosion that Four once cause on the mines where he works.
When Four was getting ready for an all day shift, Tris's last words were: “I'll see you at midnight. When you get home." But she never did. Once Four was dead, she went through a deep depression she never grew out of. Not even when the war between the Districts and the Capitol unfolded. And she only suffered much worse when her daughter, Prim, died during the war.
Four would have never known his daughter, Katniss, who was the face of the country's rebellion, just as her mother had been the face of their own.
